Playlist - Female Voices

For some reason that I can't actually remember I started making a playlist of songs sang by women last night. Actually, going back through my thought process, it started with me randomly listening to Catatonia, remembering how much I liked them in the 90's and then automatically moving on to Mazzy Star and Garbage. Then I just decided to make a playlist of female artists who had touched me at some point in my life, and most probably continue to do so. It started smallish and then just grew to 123 songs. There are probably some that I missed, and there is definitely more than one song for those that I would (and most likely still do) listen to over and over again. I had to reduce some in places, and I wish I could have added more of others, but I think it's quite complete.

A lot of the 90's favourites like Hole, L7, Belly, Throwing Muses, passing through Stevie Nicks, Tracy Chapman, all my favourite Motown ladies, Etta and Ella, on to some 80's (I nearly forgot Madonna, but added her at the last minute), my folky ladies, and some newer talents. And of course, Don't Need The Sunshine, my favourite Catatonia song.

I will make a playlist of male voices in the next few days!

Enjoy - link to playlist on Spotify below.

Dreams, Thoughts, Words

I'm surprised I still have the energy to over think everything this week. It's been a constant struggle to feel like myself with the amount of pressure and stress I feel pulling me down at work. There really is never a day when I can sit down and smile and feel content at my desk. Not anymore, anyway. I remember what it used to be like and wonder if if that was just something I had conjured up in a dream. I was never meant to be trapped somewhere, I was always the independent one, the one who did what I wanted, when I wanted, where I wanted. There were no borders back then, it was so easy to run away to another country, drop whatever I was doing and get on a train to another city, work an extra shift to pay rent, take on a new student to but a new dress or CD, go to class or not, stay in bed and read Byron or Hardy all day... How did I ever end up working all the hours of the day (and evening) in an office on the 40th floor in a building in Manhattan?!
I still dream about being able to flutter around like a butterfly, landing here and there and taking off again. I know I craved some kind of stability, but I can grow roots anywhere, and I know how deep they still are in the places where I tried to pull them out.

It HAS to change. If I close my eyes long enough maybe I will open them and realise that this is all a dream and my dreams are reality.

Who shot Rock & Roll exhibition @ The Brooklyn Museum

I finally made it over to the Brooklyn Museum to see the Who Shot Rock & Roll exhibition. I have mixed feelings about it. The photography is of course, amazing, and it's always great to see all those musicians that we admire and have admired for so long, in different settings. Sometimes posing, sometimes on stage, sometimes in completely candid shots where you see glimpses of who they really are, behind the stage personas and/or what we imagine them to be.
But, in a way, I am quite happy to see these pictures in a book. I was surprised that a lot of the pictures were actually printed quite small, and not blown up. So, that, coupled with the fact that the exhibition was packed, made it difficult to actually be able to look at any of the pictures before being shoved out of the way by some rude person who wasn't prepared to wait.
I'm happy I went, but I'm also happy that one of my lovely colleagues at work gave me the book, so I can peruse it at my leisure :)

On another note I found this beautiful video on youtube:

One of my favourite songs.
